These executives gathered to explore “Driving Innovation and Transformation with Analytics,” to discuss how analytics investments help their organizations achieve strategic objectives.

    Craig Anderson

    Director of Innovation, BayCare Health System

    The intersection of technology and healthcare has been Craig’s focus across his career with Accenture, as a co-founder of a virtual reality software company in the neuroscience and concussion sectors, and as the Director of Innovation at BayCare.

    As the Director of Innovation for BayCare, Craig’s focus is to build the Innovation practice for the health system and to pursue opportunities to integrate unique, advanced technology-enabled solutions to better serve BayCare’s Customers and Physicians. Since joining BayCare, Craig has launched projects including artificial intelligence, an Uber partnership, voice-based technologies for patients, patient-generated health data analytics, clinical communications, wearables, the BayCare TechDeck, collaborations with Apple, Amazon and Fitbit, virtual reality technologies, robotic-enabled virtual experiences for kids, and the design of technologies to serve the Wellness Center of the future.         Julius Bogdan

        Director of Analytics & Data Innovation, SCL Health

        Julius Bogdan is the Head of Data Services at SCL Health.  His mission is to build a culture of trust and shared interest in data and technology’s role in improving clinical and financial outcomes, and to increase the capacity for making data-driven decisions in healthcare.  After a successful career at Microsoft, Julius became personally interested in the human benefit of technology to improve healthcare management.  He believes that the power to drive innovation comes from the symbiotic relationship between business and technology and has the credentials, experience and vision to bring it to life.

                Tina Esposito, MBA, RHIA, FACHE

                SVP and CHIO, Advocate Aurora Health

                Named as one of the Most Powerful Women in Healthcare IT by HealthData Management and featured on the January 2016 cover of their magazine as an “agent of change”, Tina Esposito is the vice president of the Center for Health Information Services at Advocate
                Health Care.

                Tina joined Advocate in 1999 as a statistical data analyst at Lutheran General Hospital. She has served in various Advocate system roles including director of the Center for Health Information Services beginning in 2008 and promoted to Vice President in 2012. Tina and her team are responsible for system measurement and analytics in support of improved patient outcomes and organizational performance.

                Tina serves as the Advocate executive for strategic oversight of the Advocate Cerner Collaborative (ACC), which has leveraged Cerner and Advocate resources to jointly create a population health management platform for Advocate. This platform includes a big data strategy, advanced analytical models, and deployment of these models into clinical workflow.

                Additional areas of responsibilities include data warehousing, HIM, and public data.

                    Mark Hohulin, MBA

                    SVP, Healthcare Analytics, OSF Innovation, OSF HealthCare System

                    Mark Hohulin is the Senior Vice President, Healthcare Analytics for OSF Healthcare System. In this role he specializes in using healthcare data and other administrative data to inform both clinical and financial strategy. Mark led the transformation of the Healthcare Analytics Division that is responsible for the development of a robust analytical infrastructure, processes and capabilities to provide innovative and creative data-driven solutions. He leads the team that identifies and integrates internal and external data sources into the enterprise data warehouse which provides insight used in improving patient care, improving healthcare operations and identifying market/business opportunities.

                    Mark has held various leadership positions within OSF over the last 25 years. He has previously been in positions as the Director of Decision Support for OSF Healthcare System and was the Director of Strategic Planning & Decision Support at Saint Francis Medical Center.

                    Mark earned his M.B.A. from Bradley University and his Bachelors of Science in Finance from Northern Illinois University.

                        Trey Hyberger

                        Executive Director, Analytics, Baptist Health

                        Trey Hyberger is the Executive Director for Analytics and Decision Support at Baptist Health KY & IN. Trey leads and supports the analytics function across the employed medical group of roughly 1,000 providers.  He also plays a large role in the design and development of dashboards, reports and analytics for the Baptist Health ACO and CIN.

                            Tricia Julian

                            CIO, Baptist Health

                            Tricia Julian is chief information officer for Baptist Health. In this role, she is responsible for leading and developing information technology structures across the system, including overseeing the continued implementation and refinement of Baptist’s electronic health record (EHR) system.

                            Julian joined Baptist in 2011 as Ambulatory IT director, where she built an Ambulatory IT team and led the implementation of Allscripts practice management and EHR systems in employed physicians’ practices. In that position, she also formed a governance committee with physician representation from all regions to guide the direction of IT.

                            In her position as executive director, she has helped lead the EHR implementation in each of Baptist’s seven hospitals and 250 ambulatory locations in Kentucky, which has included managing vendor relationships, remaining under budget and on schedule, and overseeing training of 14,000 employees across the state, among other efforts.

                            Julian has held leadership roles for electronic health record implementations in four different healthcare organizations dating back to 2004. Prior to joining Baptist Health, she served as chief operating officer and as director of operations for The Corvallis Clinic in Corvallis, Oregon, from 2007 to 2011. In addition, she served as director of information technology for the Welborn Clinic in Evansville, Indiana, and worked in managerial roles at the Arnett Clinic in Lafayette, Indiana.

                            Julian earned a bachelor’s degree from Purdue University and an MBA with healthcare specialization from Indiana Wesleyan University. She and her husband have three teen-age children. She is active in various ministries within her church community and enjoys running and tandem cycling.

                                Mark Lantzy

                                President, IU Health Plans

                                Mark Lantzy is the senior vice president and chief information officer at Indiana University Health, Indiana’s leading healthcare system. He is responsible for overseeing information services, including strategic planning, operations and project delivery for the 15-hospital system. He is also the president of IU Health Plans, the 200,000-member health insurance arm of IU Health that offers Medicare Advantage, individual and family, and commercial plans.

                                Lantzy has more than 20 years of leadership experience in the healthcare field, and was the chief operating officer and chief information officer at Gateway Health, a managed care organization based in Pittsburgh, prior to joining IU Health in 2016. He also was a senior information technology leader at WellCare Health Plans, Aetna, and Accenture.  He holds an M.S. in defense science from George Washington University and a B.A. in mathematics from St. Vincent College.

                                    John Long

                                    VP, Enterprise Analytics, UW Health

                                    John Long joined UW Health as Vice President, Enterprise Analytics in October 2017.

                                    John plays a key role in the overall administration, direction, and oversight of analytics and reporting and research to support clinical, financial and client reporting, product development and business strategy.

                                    He is also responsible for the development and execution of analytical activities to provide senior leadership with information and tools for strategic decision making and planning, healthcare utilization and costs, affordability opportunities, reimbursement projects and issues, population health and clinical outcomes, provider patterns and variations, trends and forecasting, data and informatics needs, emerging technologies.

                                    Prior to joining UW Health, John worked at Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston SC as the Chief Analytics Officer where he was responsible for the Epic program, clinical ancillary applications and analytics.  Prior to MUSC led the reporting, data warehouse and DBA teams for Fresenius Medical Care and Health Dialog, both in the Boston area.

                                    John holds a Bachelor of Science (B.S.), Industrial Engineering from Northeastern University in Boston Massachusetts and his Master of Science (M.S.), Computer Software Engineering from Northeastern University in Boston Massachusetts.

                                        Tristan Markwell

                                            Jon McManus

                                            VP, Enterprise Analytics, Sharp HealthCare

                                            Jon McManus is the Vice President of Enterprise Analytics for Sharp HealthCare in San Diego, California. He is a veteran Healthcare leader and technologist who has worked with some of the largest healthcare systems in the country. Mr. McManus is a recognized technology expert with a history of developing innovative and transformational technology strategies for organizations of all sizes. His experience spans a variety of healthcare settings including academic medicine, county and government systems, public sector healthcare, consulting, vendor product development, non-profit systems, and technology start-ups.

                                            Sharp Healthcare is not-for-profit integrated regional health care delivery system located in San Diego which includes four acute-care hospitals, three specialty hospitals, three affiliated medical groups and a health plan. Jon leads a team of 90 FTEs covering all areas of healthcare analytics, architecture, warehousing, interfaces, web development, interoperability, patient matching and data governance. He has over 12 yrs. experience working with but not limited to Epic, Cerner, Allscripts, Cisco, Hortonworks, Cloudera, GE, Denodo, Salesforce, Microsoft, Tableau, IBM and SAP and holds numerous technical certifications.

                                                Gil Mendez PhD

                                                As the Director of Analytics and Innovation at Banner Health, Gil manages a team of data scientists whose responsibility is to provide analytic support to inform clinical and financial strategy. Gil has led efforts that provide innovative data-driven solutions and insightful analyses to various departments including clinical, process optimization, population health, supply chain, HR, digital business, marketing, etc.

                                                He earned a PhD in Mathematics (Arizona State), Master’s in Statistics (Arizona State), and Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering (Purdue).                                                     Lance Millburg has over 15 years in healthcare information technology and operations improvement. He currently serves as the System Director of Decision Sciences for Memorial Health System in Springfield, IL. In this role, Lance works closely with executive leadership to establish the data and analytics strategy for the health system, and with his team to execute the tactics required to accomplish the strategy. He leads a dedicated team of data scientists and data engineers that work hard every day to turn information into actionable insights, in order to support the mission of improving the lives of the communities served.

                                                    Prior to his time in Decision Sciences, he served several roles in both Operations Improvement and Information Services. During this tenure, he was an instrumental part of the team that earned Memorial Medical Center the American Hospital Association’s Quest for Quality prize in 2016.

                                                        Lonny Northrup

                                                        Senior Medical Informaticist, Intermountain Healthcare

                                                        Lonny Northrup is a Senior Medical Informaticist, Intermountain Healthcare. For several years, Lonny has lead innovation efforts to advance Intermountain’s substantial data and analytics capabilities to improve healthcare outcomes and reduce costs. Lonny collaborates regularly with the other leading healthcare providers across the country to accelerate the discovery and adoption of the most impactful data and analytic solutions. As part of this collaboration, Lonny is a member of the leadership council and leads the big data and advanced analytics special interest group for the Healthcare Data and Analytic Association, which has over two thousand members from more than four hundred of the nation’s leading healthcare systems. Lonny frequently presents in industry forums on Intermountain’s achievements in data and analytics. Recently this has included presentations on big data and machine learning and the significant role of new data sources like genomic data, device data and patient reported data.

                                                            Nnaemeka Okafor MD, MS

                                                            VP and CHIO, Memorial Hermann Health System

                                                            Dr. Nnaemeka ‘Emeka’ Okafor serves as the Vice President and Chief Health Informatics Officer for Memorial Hermann Health System (MHHS) in Houston. He has been an informatics Physician executive with MHHS since 2014. Current duties include serving as a trusted problem-solving liaison for clinicians, health system executives, Information Technology (IT) staff, and IT vendors. He provides leadership for enterprise-wide Health Information Technology (HIT) and Electronic Health Record (EHR) planning, development, design implementation and benefit realization. He is also responsible the developing of informatics resources, expanding the MHHS virtual health footprint and maturing service line analytics for the Health System.  He is boarded in Emergency Medicine, Clinical Informatics and Medical Quality. He has been part of the academic faculty at the McGovern Medical School in Houston since 2007 and still practices Emergency Medicine, educating fellows, residents and medical students.  He has research published on medical error reporting, diagnostic errors, patient care transitions and data visualization.  He completed his medical school at University of Missouri-Columbia, and his emergency medicine residency at Boston Medical Center.

                                                                Peter W. Prina MBA, MSISM

                                                                Peter Prina is director in information services at Spectrum Health, a .5 billion not-for-profit integrated health system based in West Michigan. His focus is on enterprise information management and how Spectrum leverages data and analytics for strategic outcomes. Peter’s vision is that Spectrum Health leads the nation in its use and application of data and analytics across all of its service lines and functions, including 14 hospitals, a multispecialty medical group with more than 1,500 physicians and advanced practice providers, a variety of ambulatory, post-acute, and ancillary health care services, and a 800,000 member health plan.


                                                                Peter joined Spectrum Health in 2014. He has partnered with advanced analytics teams to promote data driven decision making and helped advance business intelligence and analytics capabilities. His work includes the execution of the system’s strategic priorities, including implementation of data and analytics to support an integrated clinical and revenue cycle system and the creation and use of shared clinical and health plan data.

                                                                Prior to joining Spectrum Health Peter served as a consultant where he led efforts to build and implement data warehouses, devised business intelligence solutions, and led business process transformations. His career includes undergraduate and graduate class instruction at local colleges and universities.

                                                                Peter holds a bachelor’s degree in English and Computer Applications from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. He was also awarded masters’ degrees in business administration with a focus in entrepreneurship and science in information systems management from Loyola University in Chicago. He also holds a project management professional designation from the Project Management Institute.

                                                                    John Pyhtila, Ph.D., is the Chief Data and Analytics Officer of the Partners Healthcare System. John is responsible for maximizing the utility of the vast amounts of current and future data available to Partners and enabling innovation through advanced analytics. John also spent time at McKinsey & Company supporting clients across multiple industries on both strategy and operations. Early in his career John worked as an engineer for both Hewlett-Packard and Motorola. John has a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Michigan State, a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Stanford and a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Duke University.

                                                                                    David Jackson

                                                                                    VP Advisory Services, Optum

                                                                                    David Jackson brings more than 20 years of experience in healthcare from both the provider and the payer perspective.  As Vice President, Managed Analytics, he currently leads Optum’s end-to-end managed analytics services offerings, including full outsourced analytic solutions for both payer and provider clients.

                                                                                    Prior to joining Optum, David spent 8 years at IBM Watson Health and its predecessor companies.  As Vice President of Professional services, he led a provider analytics and consulting services organization that leveraged IBM Watson Health assets to help hospitals and health systems respond to various business challenges in the current healthcare environment.

                                                                                    In addition, David previously served as the director of health care analytics for Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, where he led corporate analytics and business intelligence initiatives. Most notably, David led the growth and development of analytics in the organization from a small team of analysts to a diverse and recognized discipline that spanned most health plan key business functions.

                                                                                        Tushar Mehrotra

                                                                                        Tushar Mehrotra is the Analytics practice lead for Optum Advisory Services and is responsible for leading a team of 100+ analytics professionals including health economists and actuaries to serve payer and provider clients on data and analytics topics.  He possesses 13 years of consulting experience working with client leaders in healthcare across strategic, organizational, operational, and technology topics.

                                                                                        Tushar’s leadership in healthcare analytics has included working with client executives to develop analytics strategy (e.g., determining where to focus and how to start, understanding economic value, developing use cases)  and an execution and operational approaches (e.g., developing partnerships, creating a talent plan, and building operating and governance models, and establishing roadmaps to achieve rapid value). Tushar has deep expertise serving clients on these topics across the healthcare landscape, including payer, provider, life sciences, and federal healthcare.

                                                                                        Prior to joining Optum Advisory Services, Tushar spent the past 7 years at McKinsey & Company in Washington D.C., as an Associate Partner. He was one of the core leaders in the North America Digital and Analytics practice for healthcare. He has published articles on healthcare digital and analytics topics, and has served on panels and roundtables with leaders in the industry.
