The Scottsdale Institute (SI) is pleased to announce the appointment of John Glaser, PhD, a distinguished leader in healthcare information technology, as the new Board Chair. Dr. Glaser succeeds Don Wegmiller, who co-founded the organization 32 years ago with the late Stan Nelson and will now transition to the role of Chair Emeritus. Tom Sadavary will remain as Vice Chair and Michael Shabot, MD, will continue as Secretary/Treasurer.
Dr. Glaser’s appointment signals a new chapter for the Scottsdale Institute, building on the foundation of collaboration and innovation established by its co-founders. For over three decades, SI has been a premier forum for health systems to share best practices and leverage information technology to create more effective, affordable, and equitable healthcare.
“John Glaser’s extensive experience and visionary leadership in health IT make him the ideal person to guide the Scottsdale Institute,” said Don Wegmiller. “His deep understanding of the industry and his commitment to innovation will be invaluable as the organization continues to grow and adapt to the evolving needs of our members.”
With an impressive career spanning academia and the private sector, Dr. Glaser brings a wealth of knowledge to his new role. He is currently an Executive-in-Residence at Harvard Medical School and holds faculty positions at the Harvard School of Public Health and the UTHealth School of Biomedical Informatics. His executive leadership experience includes roles as Senior Vice President of Population Health at Cerner Corporation, CEO of Siemens Health Services, and CIO at Partners HealthCare.
A recognized thought leader, Dr. Glaser has held leadership positions in numerous influential organizations, including founding chair of the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) and past president of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). He has also served as chair of the American Telemedicine Association and the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Digital Health, and as a Senior Advisor to the US Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology.
His contributions to the field have earned him prestigious accolades, including the John P. Glaser Innovation Award (established by the School of Biomedical Informatics, University of Texas Health Sciences Center), the William B. Stead Thought Leadership Award from the American Medical Informatics Association, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from CHIME. Dr. Glaser holds a PhD from the University of Minnesota and has authored over 200 articles and four books on the strategic application of IT in healthcare.
As the new Board Chair, Dr. Glaser will lead Scottsdale Institute’s mission to inspire and convene thought-leading member health systems and their partners to leverage information and technology for whole-person care. The Scottsdale Institute is confident that his leadership will continue to shape the industry and advance the organization’s legacy of excellence.
