Einstein Health Network (EHN), was struggling with recurring and growing financial losses, both in their medical group and at their hospital. Wait times in the medical network were extremely long – up to nine months for a new appointment – and they experienced significant “referral leakage.” EHN leaders identified patient access as one of the sources of their financial challenges ($81M loss). While it was difficult for patients to get appointments with physicians, the no-show rate was high (19.4%) and most practices had excess clinical capacity.
