WEBINAR | Towards the Equitable Use of Machine Learning and Algorithms in Healthcare

Anjali Jain, MD, Medical Officer for the Division of Evidence-Based Practice, Center for Evidence and Practice Improvement, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), and Juan Rojas, MD, Coggeshall Instructor of Medicine in the Section of Pulmonary and Critical Care, University of Chicago Medicine. Recent reports have highlighted the role of algorithms used in healthcare, including those developed using artificial intelligence and machine learning, in perpetuating racial/ethnic and other disparities in care and outcomes.  Drs. Jain and Rojas discuss the topic and several efforts to identify and mitigate such biases.  Dr. Jain describes the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s (AHRQ’s) evidence review on the topic and the results of a Request for Information (RFI) about awareness, impact and potential solutions to mitigate bias and improve disparities.  Dr. Rojas presents a health system strategy to evaluate for and mitigate biases resulting from machine learning models.
