Kathleen A. Harder, Ph.D. and John R. Bloomfield, Ph.D., University of Minnesota, describe important elements that should be considered when developing and implementing a system-wide automated medical record (AMR) system. They are currently addressing these elements with SI member Allina Hospitals and Clinics, MN. Harder and Bloomfield discuss computer-user interface issues such as information display, functionality, and consistency, as well as issues surrounding space constraints and the accessibility of computer equipment. They also address important issues pertaining to staff acceptance, including computer literacy and training. The presentation will underscore the importance of incorporating Human Factors considerations into a formal AMR implementation plan.
