SUMMIT | 2022 Clinical Informatics: The Time is Here: Leveraging More Patient-Specific and Workflow Context

November 14, 2022 - November 15, 2022

The Time is Here: Leveraging More Patient-Specific and Workflow Context

How is your health system navigating the many challenges surrounding workflows for benefits inside—and outside—your organization? Join a select group of your Clinical Informatics Affinity Group peers for Scottsdale Institute’s 2022 Summit, The Time is Here: Leveraging More Patient-Specific and Workflow Context, sponsored by Hearst Health and First Databank.

November 14-15, 2022 at the Westin Kierland, Scottsdale, AZ

Overview

One question we hear regularly from our Clinical Informatics professionals is how to streamline workflows to benefit everyone involved: clinical teams, consumers, patients and the public. Over the course of two days, we’ll discuss the challenges and benefits around:

  • Enabling Clinical Decision-Making via Tech: Automating routine tasks, reducing alert fatigue and simplifying the Med Rec burden
  • Redefining the Care Team & Improving the Patient Experience: Utilizing informatics to improve experiences, obtaining and integrating medical devices and navigating the opioid crisis
  • Governing the Clinical Informatics Function in Today’s Health System: Using analytics to tune CDS, supporting clinical trials at health systems and fostering medication safety
  • Delivering on Value-Based Care: Incorporating informatics to drive down costs of care, instituting CDS to guide compliance to quality measures and studying medication adherence to drive better outcomes

Delivering on Value Based Care

Discussion Hosts: Tyler Haberle, MD, FACP, ACHIO for Pop Health & VBC, AVP, and Chris Barber, MS, Pop Health & VBC Informatics Director, and Courtney Cleveland, MS, Clinical Informatics Analyst, Intermountain Healthcare; Melinda Cooling, DNP, MBA, APN, NEA-BC, VP Advanced Practice / Chief Clinician Exec, OSF/Saint Gabriel Digital Health, (Healthcare Transformation / Utilization of APPS)

Questions to consider:

  • How are you driving down the cost of care with informatics at your organization? Do you use any standard measures or analytics to do so, or is more done ad hoc? Or, are you focusing more on the logistics of VBC, identifying patients, avoiding leakage, etc., than on the cost of care?
  • Have you instituted CDS to guide compliance to quality measures? If so, how well has it worked? Did you build it in-house or use a commercial product? Is it patient-specific enough to be helpful to the clinician (i.e., is the signal-to-noise ratio acceptable to users)?
  • Has your organization looked at medication adherence as a component of driving better outcomes? If so, what have you done, and has it worked? If not, why do you think that it’s not been prioritized?
  • Have you seen significant shifts in clinical practice as you transition to value-based care and, if so, would you share examples?

Redefining the Care Team and Improving the Patient Experience

Discussion Host(s): Lea Ann Arnold, DNP, MS, RN, Northwestern Medicine (Staffing Shortages and Agency)

Questions to consider

  • Given the current state of financial pressures, clinical training gaps, and staffing challenges, what
are you doing to redesign the care team roles and processes?
  • What are some potential uses of technology including cameras, voice activated ambient
listening devices and remote monitoring processes that might help support workflows?
  • What care team workflow processes may have to be re-engineered with new technologies to
account for the clinical knowledge gaps of new trainees and staffing shortages as experienced
    staff retire?
  • Are there other informatics project that you have underway that are focused on improving the
patient experience (e.g., virtual nurse as a member of the care team pre/post procedure, e-
prescribing medical devices, accessing pharmacogenomics information, etc.)?

  • How are you using analytics, if at all, to make decisions about which CDS you install, de-install or tune?
  • Has the recent legal decision on the Vanderbilt case impacted your decision making? Did it impact your organizational priorities?
  • Does clinical informatics get involved in supporting clinical trials at your organization? Why or why not?

Discussion Host: Alan Weiss, MD, MBA, FACP, VP & CMIO, BayCare Health System

Questions to consider:

  • Which routine tasks do your clinicians most frequently ask to be automated?
  • For which online tasks do your users most frequently ask for improvements?
  • Do you have successes (or less-than successful attempts) you could share around alleviating clinician burden by automating work?
  • To lower frustration with alerts, do you have any initiatives to increase the signal-to-noise ratio for your CDS? How do you measure success?
  • Have you explored more context-specific options for medication CDS?
  • What has your organization done to reduce the med rec burden for clinicians?
